Personal Learning Network... You are your own teacher...

After taking a look at the recent assignment (OK, I know I am behind) one could see how useful a personal learning network (or PLN) could help in future careers.  With creating your own network of learning sources, you can continually keep furthering yourself in tactics of your career choice.  My personal choice would to look into the aspects resources.  To start this network, I have set up an account for Symbaloo, and interactive free website where I can quick and fast tiles to my homepage and quickly be updated on various site.  Included is my Twitter feed, Facebook, and my blog on Blogger.com.

I plan to further my search and connection with Human Resource material, for now I will share with you this blog from a person who seems to have a fondness for the art:

What in the world is a Tweet???

Well of course for me to pass this course I have to bite the bullet and sign up for a Twitter account.  I swore to myself I would never get into this "fad" and die out like the rest of previous online trends, (this is directed to you Myspace).  Reading further into it though there are multiple strengths to being apart of the online community that is Twitter.

Twitter is an internet relay chat web site in which users can post "mini blogs" in under 140 characters.  What this creates is a faster and more efficient connection to users who they wish to subscribe to their blog or "follow" other users and see what they have to say.  This can be used in a business sense in which companies can create Twitter accounts and have users follow and learn more about their products and even run promotions.  In this fast paced world we live in currently, Twitter is accessible from mobile devices too including Ipods and Cellular devices which make this information even more readily available to the user.

I feel that the only draw back to Twitter though is the limitation of the information that can be posted in one "tweet" or blog post on the site.  To give the follower more information, you would have to post a link to the website you are discussing and give further details in regards to this.  Another drawback from Twitter would the instance in which information can be drowned with the millions of users already on Twitter.  With the new technology of Twitter, there are already instances of spam tweets which plague the log of tweets a person follows.

All in all, I do feel that Twitter is a strength to business with the aspect getting a name out there and promotion wise.  I am very interested to see where my Twitter account takes me, and hopefully, make some decent networking decisions that will play in my favor in the future.

Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality is becoming a growing issue in this ever evolving Internet world.  Net Neutrality is a term used to describe the principle that Internet Service providers or the government should follow to allow all Internet users to access all content on the Internet without any restrictions or disturbance with certain sites.  This is an unspoken agreement that an Internet service provider will never limit what a subscriber cab view, basically stating they they cannot turn the services to the Internet to that of television in which there are brackets to what they can enjoy.
Another example of net neutrality would be along the lines of Verizon and Google, in which due to Google creating the Android for just Verizon, there are thoughts that Google may provide better service to Verizon.  If a person looking for a cell phone company types it in to the Google search engine, Google can break net neutrality by bringing up multiple links to Verizon and only Verizon.  This can technically create a monopoly with businesses and in general is unfair to consumers and competitors.
An interesting thing I recall reading about previously was the note that BP oil purchased “Ad words” from Google during the Gulf Oil Spill which lead to only positive links that did not make BP look like a bad company.  Check out the link I have posted for the article, it is pretty ridiculous thinking that businesses can get away with this kind of business tactics now a days.

Discovering the Internet

The creation of the internet has made a huge impact on today’s world and has set a standard for how people live their lives in this present day.   The internet is a network of computers that connect people to one another and help share information to educate and assist with tasks.  There is a massive variety of different reasons and services the internet helps people including business matters, education, entertainment, and so forth.   A person in America can purchase an item at a lower cost from a business in Japan, a Canadian can read up on news that is going on in England, and a student studying abroad in Italy can still attend their class by simply connecting to the internet.

The idea of the internet was first created through the idea that information can be shared and protected by connecting two or more computers.  First brought up by the government in the early 1960s, ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) was to develop this idea of sharing information with the rest of the world with the help of packet switching, which is the sending of data in small batches  (called packets) instead of using a dedicated line which could be disrupted.  Two computers were connected in Massachusetts and California in 1965 through an experiment and helped set the stage for the continuation and development of the internet.  This single experiment started the ARPANET, the original internet.

In 1972, researchers noticed that with the advancement and other types of this new process, there was no single protocol in which computers can handle all of this sharing of information.  Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf went on to create the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the internet Protocol (IP) which helped provide control flow of the packets being shared throughout all systems.  This protocol is still used today.  In the early 1990s, the very first web browser that used HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)  format, which creates pictures, different text, and links to web pages, were created to help give the public a connection to this new found technology.  The very first web browser created would be Netscape founded by Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen.

Individuals and businesses connect to the internet by companies known as Internet Service Providers (ISP).  These companies include Time Warner, Verizon Fios, Earthlink, and NetZero.  They provide the service of connection with offering different types of speed, bandwidth, customer service, and tech support.  There are multiple ways people connect to the internet using the methods of dial up, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Cable, Satellite, and mobile wireless devices.  All of these different types of connections have their positives and negatives, but all in all, they help connect the individual to a vast collection of information that helps make life just a little bit easier.

Blogging is a good idea!

I take it from reading articles in regards to the importance of a weblog or a blog for short is that the main point is to spread the news of the day.  It gives personal aspects for a community to share their ideas and express the feelings they have on variety of topics.  Anyone has the ability to write from an aspect that is interesting to their life.  For example, I am heavily influenced in my life from music.  I hope to share my ideas and thoughts regarding this topic and many others that I find close to me.

One of the things I look forward to this class is learning more about my classmates and what interests they have in their life.  Simply by reading a person’s blog you can find out a lot about someone’s personality.  I think one of the difficult things to maintaining a blog would to be keeping updates on your ideas and finding topics to write about.  Don’t get me wrong, there is more than plenty to write about but to find time in this fast paced way of life with the pressures of work, family, and school is sometimes underrated.  But using the time you do find is one of the best ways to express yourself and I also see it as somewhat of a stress reliever for certain people.

Another aspect that is certainly necessary for blogging is to keep businesses thriving based on quick information received from the connections of the blogging community and this is one of the reasons why social networking is an important topic to search into to become successful in your business needs.  Thanks for taking the time to read this blog, I certainly hope to keep you entertained with future articles I wish to share with you.
